Healthy with a Twist: Vegan BLT (with NayoWhipped)

Tags

Growing up, I was never a big fan of bacon. To this day, I do not understand the obsession. At all.

I do recognize that I may be the minority here, but everything about bacon—the smell, the greasiness, the look—just grosses me out. In fact, before I even knew what “vegetarian” meant, I may or may not have ordered a “BLT, hold the B.” Yep, I was never an easy customer—forever altering the meals on the menu.

At home, I frequently enjoyed sandwiches containing only mayo and tomato. (Try it. I promise it’s delicious).

For me, it wasn’t the bacon that drew me in—rather, it was the creamy mayo. The more mayo, the better.

Two pieces of wonder bread + thick tomato slices + a double layer (have to cover each slice of bread) of mayonnaise = pure comfort food.

As I became more health-conscious, I cut out mayo. And after awhile, it began to sound gross. I suppose I had “trained my taste buds” or something. Talking about  my taste buds as if they are trainable—totally normal, right?

Somewhat recently, I discovered the world of vegan sandwich spreads. Welcome back mayo and tomato sandwiches (with a few twists, of course)!

And say hello to my version of the classic BLT (this time I’m not holding any ingredients back—not even the “bacon”).

Take a look.

vegan BLT with Nasoya

Vegan “bacon” and Nasoya Nayonaise are the stars in this little gem. Of course, whole wheat bread, crisp romaine, and sweet cherry tomatoes are just as integral to the final masterpiece.

I honestly think that the veganized version of this sandwich surpasses its fat-filled ancestor. By far.

As is the rule here on the New Healthy—this meal is a nutritional upgrade to its classic counterpart.

Nix the white bread. Go for whole wheat.

Don’t be shy—load it up with veggies.

Say goodbye to the greasy stuff and choose vegan “bacon”.

And finally, give the new Nasoya a try to top if off!

veganized BLT

You may know Nasoya as the nation’s leading brand of tofu—but did you know they also have a line of vegan sandwich spreads (and lots of other great products too)? Well, they do! In fact, they’ve recently perfected some of their products to make them even better than before.

So what’s new about Nasoya’s Nayonaise line?

Nasoya

  • smoother, creamier texture (I’ll testify to that!)
  • made from expeller pressed oil (hello, vitamin B12 – perfect for vegetarians and vegans alike)
  • fortified with Omega 3 ALA
  • non-GMO!
  • a new variety with a tangier taste (akin to Miracle Whip) called NayoWhipped!

One of the challenges with a plant-based diet is finding dairy-free foods that are both rich and creamy. Luckily, companies (like Nasoya) are continually working to find awesome vegan alternatives that make it easier to give up things like creamer, cheese, and mayo.

Guys, ick-inducing vegan products are a thing of the past. Delicious vegan alternatives are here—and they’re continuously improving!

Also, if you’re watching your calories, they have something for you too—Nayonaise Light!

Only 20 calories per tablespoon! I am dreaming up a light, creamy, and vegan salad dressing as we speak.

Have you ever veganized or healthified a classic meal?

Disclaimer: Nasoya sent me these products for free in exchange for my honest review. And I am being completely  honest when I recommend that you give these a try (especially if you are/were a mayo a miracle whip fan, as I used to be).
